Blessing of the Fleet Procession
Over the weekend, Iona Presentation College students were invited to participate in Fremantle’s annual Blessing of the Fleet Procession, an important religious tradition that marks the opening of the fishing season. This cherished community event sees boats blessed as prayers are offered for a safe and successful season, and for the safe return of all who set out to sea.
Students assisted in carrying the Madonna di Capo D'Orlando (Our Lady of Capo D'Orlando) in the procession from St Patrick's Basilica to Fishing Boat Harbour, partaking in such an important event where spirit, faith, tradition and culture collide.
Given a number of Iona families have special connections to the Fremantle fishing community, it was a joy and pleasure to be invited to participate in this special day and we were privileged to learn from those who have continued to keep this tradition alive.
Thank you and commendations to Olive C. (9 O'Dowling), Catia L. (9 Moynihan), Amelia P. (10 Treacey), Ella M. (10 Kildare), Claudia F. (9 Kildare), April B. (9 Columba) and Francesca C. (9 Columba) for their participation in this incredible important community event and for representing Iona Presentation College.
